Exploring our relationship with the natural world through wild crafts and outdoor activities
Underhill Farm
Just Because it's known.......
Doesn't mean it's explored
History
The recently renovated cottage dates back to the 16th century and has undergone countless changes over the years, originally a quarryman’s cottage for the limestone quarries, the place slowly evolved into a farm and remained so until it was abandoned in the early 70’s . The large stone barn dates back to the 19th century and the other buildings are later editions.
Environment
Llanymymech rocks and nature reserve are of national importance and home to a wide variety of rare plants and animals, the thin soils which extend onto the farm, along with its abandonment, have meant that many of the same species have been able to thrive. Keep an eye out for rare bee and pyramidal orchids, beautiful butterflies, insects and peregrine falcon, buzzards and sparrow hawk over head.
The Future
We aim to keep Underhill Farm as a low impact ecotourism site for small numbers of people. We will not be developing a large site or major facilities, nor hosting large events. To ensure we can provide a good service however, our commitment to this special place will see us develop our accommodation and facilities to include a toilet and shower block and small bunkhouse accommodation. Our programme of wild craft and outdoor activities will also continue to develop as will our exhibition and arts space. All this will develop along side our attentive work to the natural environment on the farm, which has already seen the safe - guarding of our traditional meadows and wild areas as well as the introduction of coppices, willow plantation, veg, soft fruit, and orchard varieties. We aim to restore the wet land and pond area and develop further important habitats.
Deserted for over 30 years, Underhill was given a new lease of life in the spring of 2009 when it was bought by the Evison family. Since then they have worked tirelessly with the help of friends and family to bring this wonderful place back into being. There is still much work to be done however we invite you to enjoy this special environment with us and hope that you enjoy your time on the farm.
